Point of View
A very common question I get is "do you suffer from epilepsy? " I can understand why people would think "suffer" would be the correct word, but it's not. I don't get offended because I've heard that question countless times and I don't take criticism seriously. Instead of "suffer", I would say "struggle" because its a less extreme term.
When I tell people I have epilepsy, they think "oh my gosh this poor young lady!" I feel so bad for her. First off, I'm not that empathetic about myself. Second, is I feel bad for the person saying that vs the other way around because of lack of education. Finally, I appreciate why people would think that, but I wouldn't change my point of view about having epilepsy. I find the best way to understand an epileptic's point of view is having to learn about it.
The reason why I write, promote, advocate, and stand up for myself is to show the world what I'm capable of and spread awareness about epilepsy too. This is why I decided to start a blog and I eventually went into YouTube because I love getting epilepsy awareness out there. I find "WHAT MAKES YOU WEAK, MAKES YOU STRONGER!"
Epilepsy can be a "struggle" from time to time. It is a part of myself except I fight and don't "suffer " from this condition. I mean like everyone has medical problems, and since I don't make mine a big deal in a negative way, it's not worth it. However, putting epilepsy awareness in an educated and positive way can make a big difference.
The answer between "suffer" and "struggle" is instead of feeling bad for having epilepsy, what if it was, "how do you feel about having epilepsy?" That is the better way to put someone's point of view on what they're going through. Therefore, be careful what you say/ ask and open up for some education.
